Before joining Wellcome in October 2013, Jeremy Farrar was director of the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit in Vietnam for 18 years. His research interests were infectious diseases, tropical health, and emerging infections. He has published over 500 peer-reviewed scientific papers, mentored many dozens of students and fellows, and served as chair on several advisory boards for governments and global organizations, including the World Health Organization. He was named 12th in Fortune's list of the World's 50 Greatest Leaders in 2015.

He is a fully licensed and registered medical practitioner and was formerly the lead MoD liaison on all medical matters across U.K. government departments.

Dr Jeremy Wakeford is a senior macroeconomist at Quantum Global Research Lab, a think tank based in Switzerland whose mission is to generate innovative models and policy advice for inclusive and sustainable development in Africa and the world. At QGRL his research focus has been mainly on the sustainable use of natural resources, especially in Africa. He has led several large-scale green economy research projects (covering issues such as the energy-food-water nexus, green innovation systems, and renewable energy financing), as well writing a regular Commodities Outlook and developing forecasting models for commodity prices.

Jeroen van der Sommen

Jeroen van der Sommen

Jeroen van der Sommen is the co-founder and managing director at Akvo, an organization seeking to revamp and disrupt development aid through data and digitalization. He started his career as a hydrogeologist in Burkina Faso in 1982 and holds a master’s degree in Hydrology from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Throughout the 1980s, he worked and lived in Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Niger, Mali, Indonesia, and India, managing water supply and management projects on behalf of organizations such as the World Bank and the European Union. In 1998, he founded the Netherlands Water Partnership, where he built a dynamic network of over 200 member organizations. Today, he is the driving force behind Akvo’s strategy in West Africa.

He served as principal deputy of the U.S. Military HIV Research Program, as well as chief of the Laboratory of Molecular Virology and Pathogenesis and project manager in the HIV Vaccines Project Management Office for the U.S. Army Medical Materiel Development Activity. Kim was a professor in the Department of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
