United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Babatunde Osotimehin as the U.N. Population Fund’s new executive director. The former Nigerian health minister will succeed Thoraya Ahmed Obaid, who will step down on Dec. 31.
The U.S. government has congratulated Osotimehin on his appointment.
U.N. diplomats earlier revealed that Ban had intimated his choice to the fund’s board and sought feedback ahead of the official announcement on Nov. 19.
