Ban Ki-moon: UN Peace-building Fund Needs Generous Donations

    By Eliza Villarino // 05 November 2010

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has issued an appeal to boost the resources of the global body’s peace-building fund.

The fund was created in 2006 to promote peace and stability in post-conflict states. Since then, it has received USD342 million from 46 nations, and, based on U.N. data, provided funds to more than 20 countries, most of them in Africa.

The U.N. chief said the fund eyes raising, allocating and spending USD100 million annually over the next three years.

“This is an ambitious but feasible target, consistent with the trend line of our first years of experience,” Ban said during the Nov. 4 meeting of the fund’s stakeholders in New York. “This funding will allow us to engage at a significant level in a focused number of countries.”

Ban noted that various assessments have shown that the peace-building fund “is now globally acknowledged as a valuable instrument for providing post-conflict support.”
