
For all those skeptical of Bill Gates’ pronouncement that aid works, the philanthropist has an advice: Look at India.
The genius behind Microsoft and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation hailed India’s progress in health following a recent trip to the Asian nation. And his praises, captured in this opinion piece for NDTV, are not unfounded.
India, which holds the title of having the world’s second-largest population, is no longer a polio-endemic country. It now has 50 percent less incidence of HIV and AIDS as well, according to Gates.
Nowadays, the country has also become the go-to hub for affordable vaccines.
India’s health outlook seems promising. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh committed in February to invest 2.5 percent of the country’s gross domestic product in the sector by 2017. And Gates, whose foundation has invested more than $1 billion in health and poverty programs in the country, plans to “invest more in the future.”
