The first phase of a Chinese-funded road project has commenced in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to officials of the African nation. The highway will cover 100 kilomenters and connect the cities of Lubumbashi and Kasumbalesa in the southeastern Katanga province. During the inauguration of the post-war reconstruction program, Public Works Minister Pierre Lumbi disclosed plans for a USD700 million spending for infrastructure projects, including highways, railways, schools and hospitals, this year.
