Conference call: Inside the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting

This year’s World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, was characterized by the need to translate talk into action. Journalists Catherine Cheney and Adva Saldinger bring you the highlights and explore how the discussions in Davos will impact the global development agenda.

    By Devex Editor // 25 January 2020
This year’s World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, was characterized by the need to translate talk into action. With the U.N. calling for a “decade of delivery” to achieve the SDGs by 2030, the gathering’s many high-profile attendees have faced increased pressure from civil society to commit — through funding, policy, or partnerships — to transformative and inclusive measures for change. In setting the agenda, WEF placed greater emphasis on elevating youth and indigenous voices and made urgent action on climate change a prominent focus. Building off of our Davos 2020 coverage, Devex held a conference call to highlight the key discussions, announcements, and initiatives from the annual gathering and to explore what implications the meeting’s broad agenda has for the development sector. Highlights from this conference call include: • A rundown of notable attendees — including the U.N. secretary-general and heads of many U.N. agencies — plus a look inside their Davos ambitions. • Emerging discussions on a shift from shareholder to stakeholder capitalism and the new finance mechanisms that can result. • An overview of major individual commitments from leaders and corporations, such as the launch of the data.org platform and J.P. Morgan’s development finance institution. • Examples of palpable, positive change that are driven by the relationships fostered at this type of gathering — with Gavi being one of the oft-touted success stories. Speakers: • Catherine Cheney, senior reporter, Devex • Adva Saldinger, associate editor, Devex Have follow-up questions? Send them to webinars@devex.com. Listen to the full conference call here:
