The World Bank announced a three-year grant of $296.7 million to rehabilitate the main hydroelectric dams and the national electricity grid in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Similarly, U.K. International Development Minister Hilary Benn confirmed a $140 million aid package for the African nation this year, in assistance to development projects “that will support health and education and water and sanitation and roads, supporting good governance and security sector reform.” Benn added that progress in these initiatives will be under London’s close supervision. “Only with peace and democratic progress will the international community really be able to help development in the DRC,” he stated.
