United Nations-backed summits should remain the primary platform for future climate change negotiations, said Yvo de Boer, the organization’s climate chief, according to Xinhua News. Other platforms such as the G-20 summit are not appropriate venues for climate change talks, de Boer explained in response to criticisms that U.N. negotiations are not as effective as G-20 talks and similar forums.
The fight against climate change, de Boer explained, includes more than 100 poor countries that are not part of the G-20. A platform broader than the G-20 is needed so climate change issues can be discussed in a balanced manner, the U.N. climate chief said.
