Are you new to pursuing work on a USAID-funded project? Well, I’m sure you’re already familiar with the “1420 biodata form” for staffers. Oh, you’re not? That’s probably because it’s just one of the many bureaucratic hoops that organizations must jump through to receive funding. As a job candidate, you’ll have to jump through these hoops, too.
So in this edition of Career Hub, we’re breaking down everything about the roles that USAID contractors typically hire for. I’m also sharing insights from a social entrepreneur who pivoted from a traditional development career to launching her own purpose-driven venture. In short, it can be confusing to know how to position yourself to get hired for a USAID-funded project. This is why we’ve explained the different roles that contractors usually hire for and how they compare with other positions in the sector.

#GlobalDevJobs Q&A: Advice from a social entrepreneur
After several years working in business development for Chemonics, Stacy Edgar pursued an urge to set up a business of her own. Here are a few ways that her development career helped her launch the medical benefits platform Venteur and how it has shaped her current work:
Inspiration through partnerships. The purpose-driven nature of Edgar’s development work exposed her to various ways of doing meaningful work. The entrepreneurs she met overseas inspired her by showing “how a business could change communities.”
Support networks. Edgar’s strong professional network proved useful when she decided to go out on her own. “If you can put your vision out there, and not be afraid to just try it, the right people tend to pop into your life at the right times,” she says.
Being a “systems thinker.” “That ‘systems thinking’ that you get from working in development — that does help with being able to handle some of the complexities that come up,” she says, referring to a collaborative, team-based approach to problem-solving.
