Peter Sands, who heads the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has a sober message for anyone looking to the private sector to address the twin challenges of climate change and poverty in low-income, conflict-affected countries: Think again.
Sands, speaking to my colleague Vince Chadwick ahead of a global financing summit in Paris that starts today, says the Global Fund is looking to increase its collaboration with multilateral development banks. But as a former banker himself, he says much of the current talk about innovative financial tools — of which there’ll be plenty in Paris this week — is overcooked.
He said he’s seen too many donors turn to “elaborate schemes and innovative finance ideas” that elide providing the kind of tangible support countries need in areas such as malaria control and prevention.
