It’s been anything but a quiet exit for Dr. Jean Kaseya from his former position as senior country director of the Clinton Health Access Initiative in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Kaseya, tapped as the new director general of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in February, did not receive a contract renewal from his position at CHAI at the end of 2022. Yet, he has remained closely entangled with the prominent international health organization. That includes a disputed office visit that the organization characterized as a “security breach” in an incident report, and then, about a month later, becoming involved in discussions around two CHAI staffers who have been detained by Congolese authorities.
My colleague Sara Jerving spent two months investigating the series of bizarre events that have unfolded, which raise questions about the temperament of the man unexpectedly elevated to head Africa CDC, one of the most important global health positions on the continent.
