The World Bank, U.K. Department for International Development and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency will back a Ghanaian renewable energy initiative to increase access of around 15,000 poor rural households to solar home systems and solar lanterns. The World Bank will draw USD4.35 million from the Global Partnership on Output-Based Aid to support the project. “By making renewable energy available to poor households, the GPOBA scheme will contribute both to environmental protection and to poverty reduction in Ghana,” World Bank Country Director for Ghana Ishac Diwan was quoted as saying.
