The third annual conference of the Global Environment Facility in Cape Town, South Africa yielded $3.13 billion in pledges from donors. GEF chairwoman Monique Barbut is pleased with this outcome. “This strong show of support from the international donor community is remarkable, and signals firm commitment to protecting the global environment,” Barbut said. She, however, stressed to donors the importance of fulfilling their commitments. “We cannot be complacent, and time is not on our side. The global environment is facing unprecedented threats, and these funds have to be translated rapidly into projects, programmes and policies that make a difference in developing countries,” Barbut added.
