EU-ACP lawmakers urge economic recovery efforts in Ebola-affected nations

Parliamentarians from the European Union and African, Caribbean and Pacific countries this week issued a joint call to prioritize social and economic reconstruction in Ebola-affected West Africa. EU Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica said he accepts the challenge to establish the link between relief, rehabilitation and development.

Parliamentarians from the European Union and African, Caribbean and Pacific countries this week issued a joint call to prioritize social and economic reconstruction in the regions ravaged by Ebola in West Africa.

“The current epidemic is a threat to the fragile economy and to the political and social stability of the affected countries and of the region as a whole,” they said in a unanimous resolution passed Wednesday during the EU-ACP Joint Parliamentary Assembly in Strasbourg, France.

The assembly brings together members of the European Parliament from the 28 member states and parliamentarians from the 78 ACP countries. As a consultative body, it has a political role in addressing issues on development, democracy and trade to international fora and the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm.
