The European Union is issuing EUR17 million ($21.8 million) in aid this year to help Guinea-Bissau emerge from a long-drawn civil strife. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso assured President Joao Bernardo “Nino” Vieira that the bloc “will continue to do its utmost to support Guinea Bissau in this particularly difficult situation.” The government is “at the moment making a great effort toward national reconciliation and stabilization of the country, and also reform of certain key areas,” Barroso added. Vieira acknowledged the nation “can’t do it on [its] own” and needs more aid “to get past all the problems facing” it.
