The European Union announced that it will issue an extra 15 million euros ($18.6 million) in humanitarian aid for war-torn Darfur. The assistance aims to provide food, shelter, clean water and medical services to 2.5 million people affected by the two-year-old conflict in the western Sudanese region. E.U. Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Louis Michel said: "As Darfur slips out of the media spotlight, it is essential to prevent it from becoming another 'forgotten' crisis'." Michel affirmed that "the European Commission is committed to providing humanitarian aid for Darfur as long as the needs remain" and called on other donors to do the same.
