The European Union announced that it will provide at least USD47.3 million to help countries in the Horn of Africa deal with the effects of a prolonged dry spell. E.U. Development Commissioner Louis Michel said that the financial assistance will benefit Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, and other such states. The aid will also be used to provide equipment that will map water sources and vaccination campaigns. Since 2005, the bloc has contributed roughly USD716 million in aid to Northeast Africa, which remains as one of the world’s poorest regions.
