Exclusive: Africa CDC head accused of intimidation and unfair dismissal

An anonymous group has made a raft of serious allegations against Dr. Jean Kaseya, the recently appointed head of Africa CDC, including the "abuse and threatening of staff" — charges senior management adamantly denies.

    By Rumbi Chakamba // 11 August 2023

The recently appointed leader of the Africa CDC has been accused of "ill-management and maltreatment of staff" in a letter that calls on the African Union to investigate the matter and replace him.

The letter, seen by Devex, was written by an anonymous group thought to be staffers within the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and was addressed to African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat.

The group, which dubs itself the African Union Leadership Focus Group, makes a raft of accusations against Africa CDC Director General Dr. Jean Kaseya, including the "abuse and threatening of staff" and a "clear lack of leadership.”
