French President Jacques Chirac announced that his government will spend close to $5 million to help the Central African Republic carry out financial reforms and improve public accountability. Chirac?s statement follows a similar move by Cooperation Minister Brigitte Girardin, who promised a donation of $1.2 million when she visited the poor nation in June. The French premier personally delivered the news to Francois Bozize, the newly-elected leader of France?s former colony, when they met in Paris. Last month, the United Nations Security Council asked the donor community to support the recovery efforts in the war-torn nation. Aside from France, the European Union already answered the call with a pledge worth nearly $5 million.
