Gender-focused careers in international development

Gender is now fully mainstreamed in global development programming. As such, aid groups actively seek people to fill gender roles. The Devex jobs board, for instance, hosts hundreds of gender-related job ads at any given time.

To land those jobs, it takes certain levels of experience and education, according to Patricia T. Morris, director of gender practice at the Development and Training Services, in a webinar recently hosted by Devex.

In “Gender-focused careers in international development,” Morris, a 20-year veteran in designing and directing international development programs and implementing gender mainstreaming initiatives across the globe, described how she started out as a gender specialist. She also discussed:

  • What organizations look for when recruiting for gender roles.

  • Types of positions available.

  • In-demand skills for gender work.
