Among other things, Margarett Alexandre — an assistant professor in the nursing department at York College, which belongs to the City University of New York system — leads teams that research global health issues and use these findings to advocate for improved services. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, she would travel to Haiti regularly, as well as to Moldova, to support research, lead workshops, and provide training for nursing students.
Alexandre, who holds multiple degrees related to nursing, has organized several medical missions to Haiti and carried out extensive research on the physical and emotional health of the country’s adult population following the 2010 earthquake there. She is also the founder of Mission Grandbois, a nonprofit that facilitates access to health care, nutrition, and education for children in Haiti’s Artibonite department, where her parents were born. She encouraged aspiring research or health professionals to “find [their] passion, find a mentor, and cultivate that passion.”
Devex spoke to Alexandre to learn more about contributing to global health through research and the skills that matter in this profession.
