How to get a job with Progeco

Progeco regularly seeks junior ans senior consultants for its projects. Here’s what you need to know about what this leading Italian consulting firm looks for in job candidates.

    By Alessia Chiocchetti // 18 March 2008
Are you an expert in monitoring and evaluation, institutional strengthening or other specific sectors of international cooperation? Are you familiar with project cycle management? Do you have good communication skills? If so, you may be right for Progeco. Founded in 1998 to focus on international cooperation, it is now one of the leading Italian consulting firms working on the organization and implementation of complex technical assistance activities for clients such as the European Commission, World Bank, and various agencies of the United Nations. Progeco’s recent expansion offers qualified candidates an excellent opportunity to work with an international development consultancy active in four continents. Alessandro Natali, Progeco’s international project manager for framework contracts, said the ideal candidate for both junior and senior positions has three primary characteristics: - Extensive experience in a relevant sector. - Strong intercultural and communication skills. - Familiarity with European Union and World Bank project cycle management procedures. The company usually selects professionals who apply directly for open positions. But it also has a database of potential contractors and will review the CVs to look for interesting professionals. After an initial screening, Progeco contacts short-listed candidates to determine their availability, then enters into the negotiation phase. European Commission framework contracts, which usually last between two and six months, require consulting firms to provide experts within 15 days. The quick turnaround is a recurring problem because it is often difficult for Progeco to find candidates who match the requested profile, particularly ones who live in the desired region. In these cases, Progeco works with local partners to identify potential experts. Still, because of the tight deadlines they are often unable to make a deal. For World Bank-funded positions, such as long-term technical assistance projects and multiyear procurement contracts, candidates must have extensive field experience in a specific sector. Progeco works closely with the recruited experts and develops proposals according to their recommendations. A word to the wise: “Make sure you do not apply for all the positions advertised,” Natali advised. “Many people send their CVs presenting themselves as experts in several sectors at the same time, and for profiles that are incompatible with their background.” Read more career advice articles.
