The majority of local and international non-governmental organizations in Nepal have reportedly failed to comply with existing laws that require foreign nationals working for organizations in the country to secure work permits.
Nepal’s Department of Labor said a lot of domestic and foreign NGOs have yet to comply with a law requiring them to secure work permits for all international staff members they hire, Republica reports. The news agency added that local NGOs and the Association of INGOs in Nepal have also failed to provide details of foreign nationals in their staff, as requested by the department.
Most expatriates working for NGOs in the country have approval from the Social Welfare Council, which the Department of Labor said is not equivalent to a work permit but instead the first step to securing one.
A committee tasked to monitor foreign nationals working in Nepal is expected to publish a list of companies and NGOs that have international employees without work permits, Republica says.
