Afghanistan earned its third aid package from the Asian Development Bank in a fortnight. At the close of the Afghanistan Development Forum last week, the ADB promised the central Asian country $115 million in loans to help the latter improve its transport and telecommunications infrastructure. The regional lender has just announced that it will release $50 million to deliver affordable electricity to 1.2 million rural residents in Afghanistan. Specifically, the state will manage $26.5 million in soft loan to build a transmission network as well as $23.5 million in grant to construct and rehabilitate substations and low-voltage distribution systems. The ADB expects to see the completion of the project in 2008.
