United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned that achieving the Millennium Development Goals may not happen if donor nations do not provide more aid. “The lack of any significant increase in official development assistance since 2004 makes it impossible, even for well-governed countries, to meet the Millennium Development Goals,” Ban remarked. “Adequate resources need to be made available to countries in a predictable way for them to be able to effectively plan the scaling up of their investments,” he added. So far, only five European nations – Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden – have complied with the U.N. aid target of 0.7 percent of the gross national income.
