Smallholder farmers make up an incredibly important piece of the global food system — the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, or FAO, estimates that around 35% of the world’s food comes from farms that span 10 hectares or fewer.
But these farmers receive only 0.3% of global climate funding, and they’re consistently the ones hit hardest by climate shocks such as floods and droughts.
This disparity was front and center at Devex’s Climate + summit last week on the sidelines at the United Nations’ COP 28 climate conference in Dubai. In many cases, experts said, closing the gap between farmers and solutions doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive.
