Canadian minister of international cooperation Beverley J. Oda has announced that the Canadian government is willing to pitch in more funds to support humanitarian operations in Kenya. Through the Canadian International Development Agency, Canada will disburse a total of USD3.3 million to United Nations agencies and non-governmental groups that help provide immediate relief to those affected by post-electoral violence in the state. “Canadians are very concerned by the events that are taking place in Kenya and that’s why Canada was among the first countries to announce emergency aid, ” said Minister Oda. “This additional contribution of almost USD3.3 million in funding will help organizations such as UNICEF, the World Food Program and others alleviate the suffering of those affected by the incidents of violence that followed the elections.”
The British government has also hiked up its humanitarian aid efforts in Kenya with a fresh contribution of approximately USD2.4 million, which will be used to provide food, shelter, potable water, and urgent health care for the 500,000 individuals displaced by the turmoil in the country. The funds will be funneled through the Kenya Red Cross and Medecins Sans Frontieres Belgium.
