Learn how to transition into a global development career

To help job seekers navigate a potential transition into development, we asked career coach Caroline Korda Poole what candidates need to know when approaching the sector for the first time.

    By Justin Sablich // 12 January 2023
Those who are driven by social impact and purpose often look at the work being done in the global development sector and dream of being able to make the switch from their current career path to one in global development. The good news is that to make this transition, you don’t have to start from scratch. From engineers and finance specialists to educators and tech experts, there are plenty of opportunities for professionals with a variety of backgrounds to find their fit in a development landscape that is broad and constantly evolving. “Development is not just the United Nations or implementing agencies. It can also be universities, it can be think tanks, it can be advocacy agencies. So I would think about [all] the different kinds of employers,” said Caroline Korda Poole, a certified career coach and founder of Centered Career, during a recent Devex digital event. To help job seekers navigate a potential transition into development, we asked her what candidates need to know when approaching the sector for the first time. Highlights from this event include: • Ways to decide if global development is the right fit. • How to map your skills and experience to global development jobs. • Networking tips for making essential connections. • The skills and experience you may need to round out your CV. • Answers to questions from the audience. Speaker: Caroline Korda Poole, certified career coach and founder, Centered Career. Moderator: Justin Sablich, careers editor, Devex.
