The Maoist former rebels had gone to an indefinite strike in Nepal last weekend, demanding to lead a national unity coalition, Reauters India reports.
As such, the government of Nepal has requested the U.N. peace-monitoring mission to stay for another four months though the mission originally intends to withdraw its operations on May 15.
The U.N. mission, known as UNMIN, has arms monitors at camps for weapon storage with thousands of ex-fighters. It has requested the government to take over UNMIN’s monitoring duties but it’s now unfeasible given the present political crisis.
The U.N. had not yet decided what to do, but will likely accommodate Nepal’s request. The decision will be discussed next Wednesday in a meeting.
