The new World Food Programme Executive Director Cindy McCain has shuffled her leadership team, bringing in a Swedish diplomat as her deputy executive director and chief operating officer, a move she said will streamline organizational operations.
Carl Skau will lead WFP’s coordination, strategic direction, humanitarian diplomacy, and support for field operations, according to an internal email seen by Devex. He most recently led the Department for Multilateral Partnerships at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and has since held several diplomatic posts representing his country. He began his career in the early 2000s at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the U.N. Development Programme.
Skau’s appointment returns WFP to an organizational leadership model with only one deputy executive director, concentrating power with four assistant executive directors serving under him to help guide operations. Those named to those posts are Manoj Juneja, Valerie Guarnieri, Ute Klamert, and Joyce Kanyangwa Luma.
