
Nancy Lindborg was sworn in as the U.S. Agency for International Development’s assistant administrator for democracy, conflict and humanitarian assistance on Friday (Nov. 19).
In her new position, Lindborg will be in charge of the Bureau of Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance, which comprises nine offices that provide field support to overseas USAID missions and technical assistance for programs in fields of democracy, governance, conflict, private and voluntary cooperation and humanitarian assistance. These include the Office of Food for Peace, Office of the U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance and Office of Conflict Management and Mitigation.
Lindborg’s nomination was confirmed Sept. 29 by the U.S. Senate. She comes to USAID from Mercy Corps, a non-governmental organization, where she served as president for the last 14 years. Lindborg is a a former co-president of the U.S. Global Leadership Campaign’s board of director and co-chair of the National Committee on North Korea.
Her career record also includes stints with the InterAction Disaster Response Committee and the USAID’s own Advisory Committee on Voluntary Aid. Lindborg is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Lindborg is the first USAID assistant administrator and second high-level USAID official to be sworn in, after USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah. Three other assistant administrators have so far been confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
