New fund helps lower-income countries 'leapfrog' to electric vehicles

Drive Electric, a coalition of more than 100 partners working in 65 countries housed at the ClimateWorks Foundation, has launched the LEAP Fund to support projects that are expanding access to clean transportation.

    By Catherine Cheney // 15 November 2022

Drive Electric, a philanthropic campaign focused on decarbonizing transportation globally, is launching a new fund to help low- and middle-income countries transition away from combustion-based cars, vans, trucks, buses, and other vehicles.

The LEAP Fund — which stands for Leapfrogging to E-Mobility Acceleration Partnership — will provide grants to projects that are expanding access to clean transportation. The aim is to help emerging economies “leapfrog” over the entrenchment of fossil-fueled vehicles by leveraging new technologies and approaches for electric road vehicles.

Drive Electric, a coalition of more than 100 partners working in 65 countries housed at the ClimateWorks Foundation, has selected 10 organizations across Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia to receive grants totaling $1 million.
