Where is food aid sent to Somalia being distributed? Which areas within the country are most in need of assistance? A tool created by a team of web developers and the World Food Program attempts to visualize these information and the extent of the crisis situation in the Horn of Africa in an easy-to-use and understand online map.
The map went live Aug. 18 and can be viewed at horn.wfp.org. It offers a bird’s-eye view of the food security situation in Somalia, Kenya, Djibouti and Ethiopia. It also lists the locations of WFP distribution centers and identifies areas with limited humanitarian access. The map uses data from the WFP, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the Famine Early Warning System Network, among other sources.
The map was developed by Development Seed, a U.S.-based group of web developers focused on building communication tools for the international development community, in partnership with WFP.
Meanwhile, Google offered a fundraising campaign by Save the Children a place on its search engine homepage, Google.com. A link on the homepage directs Internet users to a video of the campaign on YouTube.
