World Bank President David Malpass made it clear he is leaving on his own terms and has no regrets about his time at the helm of the preeminent multilateral lender. In an interview with Devex in his office, he dismissed criticisms of his climate stance and even lobbed his own barb at donors over their failure to meet their own environmental financial commitments.
Speaking a day after his shocking announcement that he would be resigning nearly a year early, Malpass promised his leaving will not derail the ongoing reform process that envisions an even larger role for the bank, including on climate and pandemics.
Already, the bank has identified several billion dollars in additional lending it can do annually, he said, revealing some figures for the first time, and adding that there is more to come.
