A consultant for KfW, a German development bank, died after succumbing to wounds sustained during an attack by unknown gunmen on the evening of Dec. 24 in Afghanistan.
The German national, according to reports, was working in a project to construct a road between the Kunduz and Kholm cities in the Balkh province’s Qashqargan district.
He was traveling in the district with three others, including his Afghan translator, when the attack took place. He was later taken to a hospital in a German army base, where he died, German news agencies say.
On its website, the Taliban said they had caused the attack, news agencies note.
In a Dec. 24 statement, German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Dirk Niebel conveyed his condolences to the victims of a “cowardly attack that is directed against the interests of local people,” which “once again shows the dangers of civilian reconstruction in Afghanistan.”
The attack is the latest in a series of deadly incidents involving aid workers. In August, a German national was among the team of international medics killed in the Badakhshan province.
