“As the United States government has not yet pledged to Gavi it is currently not on the Gavi Board,” a Gavi spokesperson told Devex.

After decades as a major backer of global immunization efforts, the United States has been dropped from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance’s board, due to stalled funding under the Trump administration.

In 2025, Trump administration official Mark Kevin Lloyd joined Gavi’s board as the U.S. representative, occupying one of the five seats reserved for donor countries. But recent information on the organization’s website shows Lloyd is no longer listed as a board member. The reason, Gavi said, comes down to money.

A Gavi spokesperson told Devex, “Gavi’s donors are a self-organizing group that determines Board seat representation based on financial commitments for each strategy period. As the United States government has not yet pledged to Gavi it is currently not on the Gavi Board.”
