Senegal President Abdoulaye Wade inaugurated the country’s USD 100.3-million Kounoune power plant, which was funded by the African Development Bank, the International Finance Corporation, the West African Development Bank, and other development partners. The new power plant, which has a capacity of 67.5 megawatts, promises to increase the energy generating capacity of the country by at least 13 percent, and will allow SENELEC, the nation’s power supply corporation, to channel electricity to over 20,000 homes scattered nationwide. The Kounoune power plant is the first project of its kind in Senegal to be executed by private sector players under the “Build, Own, Operate” approach.
