Opinion: The future of child sponsorship in a digital age

Given the potential of digital tools in revolutionizing charity efforts, how can we ensure security and meaningful engagement? Qatar Charity's Rofaqa initiative exemplifies a secure and impactful approach to child sponsorship.

In recent years, I’ve seen the digital transformation of charity organizations revolutionize how we operate and engage with donors. Technology has enabled us to streamline operations, increase transparency, and reach a global audience more effectively. Digital platforms and tools make it easier for donors to contribute, track their donations, and see the impact of their generosity in real time. Online fundraising, social media campaigns, and mobile apps have become essential components of modern charitable efforts, allowing us to connect with a new generation of technologically proficient, socially conscious donors.

At Qatar Charity, our team collaborated to develop an application aimed at simplifying the child sponsorship process and maximizing benefits for children. The sponsorship program traces back to Qatar Charity's origins when a group of Qatari philanthropists, concerned by the increasing number of children orphaned due to wars and conflicts in neighboring countries, established a community initiative known as The Committee of Qatar for Orphan Sponsorship. Eight years later, this grassroots effort evolved into an international NGO named Qatar Charity, expanding its activities and extending its reach to further support vulnerable children worldwide. In 2014, we launched Rofaqa, an initiative that leverages technology to provide a seamless, secure, and engaging experience for sponsors and beneficiaries alike.

Bridging hearts and hope in the digital age

Our app exemplifies how technology can enhance the efficiency and security of charitable initiatives. Designed to be user-friendly and rich in content, it provides sponsors with deep insights into the lives and needs of orphans worldwide. To safeguard the privacy and confidentiality of our users and to protect them from identity theft and internet fraud, we introduced the use of biometric data such as fingerprints and face recognition. This level of security builds trust and encourages more people to participate in sponsorship programs. This is seen in our numbers, as the Rofaqa initiative has sponsored approximately 204,800 orphans since its launch.

One of Rofaqa's most compelling features is its ability to empower sponsors to easily set up and manage their sponsorship plans. As a user, you can choose a sponsorship, establish a committed monthly donation, and track the progress of the children you support. This hands-on approach gives our donors a tangible sense of the impact their contributions are making. Over the years, we've learned the importance of investing in donor motivation. When positive feedback loops are readily available and impact is both measurable and palpable, you're more likely to sustain your donations, transforming them into personal projects. This approach significantly reduces the likelihood of “donor fatigue.”

While adhering to the highest humanitarian standards, we recognize the importance of maintaining a humane connection between donors and the children they support. Witnessing their growth and successes creates a meaningful bond. To translate this connection into the digital realm, we have introduced periodic reports that ensure transparency and accountability, critical factors in maintaining our donors’ trust.

Should donors stop funding orphanages? Some NGOs think so

NGOs working to end the dangers of institutionalization and help children be reunited with families say decades of scientific research shows that children need to grow up in a safe and loving environment, surrounded by family.

In today’s globalized world, the ability to sponsor a child from anywhere is crucial. Our team facilitated this by offering various payment methods, including credit and debit cards, and allowing sponsors to choose the country and nationality of the orphans they wish to support. From this experience, we found that this flexibility broadens the reach of the program and caters to the preferences of a diverse donor base.

One of the core values we uphold at Rofaqa is the importance of keeping children within their communities, which aligns deeply with Islamic principles. In Islamic culture, sponsoring a child, rather than adopting, is a way to empower them while respecting their native community ties and cultural environment. This approach ensures that children are not taken away from the environments they are comfortable in but are instead supported within their own communities. Sponsorship provides them with the resources they need, such as nutritious food, education, and health care, while maintaining their cultural identity and social connections. This method of sponsorship respects the dignity and autonomy of the children and their families, fostering a sense of community support and empowerment rather than displacement.

    Innovating for impact

Looking ahead, the integration of technology in child sponsorship programs such as Rofaqa will continue to grow. Innovations including virtual reality experiences, real-time video updates, and artificial intelligence-driven personalized engagement could further revolutionize how sponsors connect with and support children in need.

Rofaqa is not just an app, it exemplifies how innovative approaches can create meaningful change in the lives of vulnerable children globally. It underscores our collective commitment to ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive and succeed, regardless of their circumstances. In the broader landscape of NGOs, we hope that Rofaqa stands as an example of how technology can be used to enhance transparency, deepen donor engagement, and maximize impact. As NGOs continue to adapt to the digital age, we believe initiatives such as Rofaqa pave the way for more effective and efficient approaches to global humanitarian efforts, where every contribution makes a tangible difference in shaping a brighter future for children in need.
