Tanzania was given an even bigger cause to celebrate after U.S. President George W. Bush vowed to reinforce the country’s anti-malaria campaign with a generous supply of mosquito nets. “The disease keeps sick workers home, schoolyards quiet, communities in mourning,” Bush said during his visit to the East African state. “The suffering caused by malaria is needless and every death caused by malaria is unacceptable.” Together with the World Bank and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, the Bush administration will be distributing 5.2 million mosquito bed nets in the next six months, enough for each Tanzanian child between ages one and five. The country is one of the hot spots for the deadly disease, which kills approximately 100,000 Tanzanians every year.
