Nearly 924 million people worldwide experienced severe food insecurity last year, according to the United Nations, and these numbers are likely to rise as ongoing climate and conflict emergencies, and the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, are helping to fuel historically high food and fertilizer costs.
In response, more development organizations have needed to make adjustments to focus more of their resources on the food crisis. For example, Oxfam GB recently had “to readjust all of [its] work because of the impact it is having,” according to Parvin Ngala, the organization’s director for the Horn, East, and Central Africa region.
“We are having to get new staff because we need to expand our reach and ensure quick action to support communities. It’s also about putting all of our attention onto the food crisis,” Ngala told Devex.
