In the realm of cutting-edge technology, the buzz this year has undoubtedly been centered on artificial intelligence. While AI is not a new concept — it was first developed in the 1950s — it is a technology that has flourished with access to vastly more data and improved computational power in recent decades and its adoption has tripled since 2019, together with the advent of free, easy-to-use tools such as ChatGPT.
Research suggests AI holds enormous potential when it comes to tackling some of the most challenging social problems and accelerating progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs.
With that in mind, SDG 2 to end hunger in all its forms and achieve food security by 2030 continues to present a huge challenge. According to the World Food Programme, over 345 million people are currently experiencing severe food insecurity, a number that has doubled since 2020.
