Kristalina Georgieva, the European Union commissioner for international cooperation, humanitarian aid and crisis response, and Antonio Guterres, U.N. high commissioner for refugees, arrived in Yemen Jan. 13 for a three-day joint mission to review humanitarian operations for internally displaced people in the northern part of the country.
Georgieva and Guterres are also set to assess the humanitarian challenges posed by the continuous influx of Somali refugees into Yemen.
“The High Commissioner and I will gather first-hand and up-to-date information on the most pressing needs in these areas, and will engage with the relevant stakeholders, so that the Commission and UNHCR can continue to jointly stabilize the humanitarian situation in Yemen,” Georgieva said in a statement ahead of the trip.
The EU has provided more than euro33 million (USD43.5 million) in humanitarian aid to Yemen since 1994.
