Top Gates Foundation health grantees in 2023
Almost $5 billion was awarded in health contracts in 2023. Who were the top grantees and what topics under health did the Gates Foundation prioritize last year? Devex looked into the data to figure it out.

Health remains the top priority of the foundation, with a focus on areas such as HIV, vaccine development, and health technology, among others. Which areas did the Gates Foundation focus on this time around? Gates awards many grants for multiple areas at the same time. Multiarea grants accounted for 35.8% of the total. Looking at single-topic awards, global health and development public awareness and analysis tops the list with $1.1 billion. This is followed by polio-related awards, which totaled $585.8 million alone, then maternal, newborn, child nutrition and health with $317.3 million, malaria with $257 million, and HIV with almost $141 million. But where do these grants go? Where do the majority of the awardees come from? Grantees from the United States received the most of the awards: 468 awards worth $2.2 billion. This is then followed by grantees in Switzerland with $1.2 billion. Luxembourg comes next with only one award, but amounting to $330 million. Next is the United Kingdom with $142.2 million and then India with $102.3 million. Who were the top grantees for health? Here we see the usual suspects like The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, PATH, the World Health Organization, and the Gates Medical Research Institute. The top 10 awardees received 57.1% of the overall funding for health — around $2.8 billion. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Number of awards: 2. Total amount: $860,000,000. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria received two grants worth $860 million in 2023. The highest it received amounted to $846 million as a form of support from the Gates Foundation so it could continue its operations. Gates Medical Research Institute Number of awards: 1. Total amount: $844,000,000. The Gates Medical Research Institute was awarded a $844 million grant to support its development of transformative therapies, biologics, vaccines, and biomarkers for the world’s poorest populations. European Investment Bank Number of awards: 1. Total amount: $330,000,000. The European Investment Bank received a $330 million grant in the form of a partnership, providing performance payments towards polio eradication. World Health Organization Number of awards: 33. Total amount: $311,908,423. The World Health Organization received the most grants in 2023, with 33 awards that totaled $311.9 million. The highest grant it received amounted to $87 million to support the Polio Eradication Initiative. United States Fund for UNICEF Number of awards: 22. Total amount: $194,711,265. The United States Fund for UNICEF received 22 grants totaling $194.7 million. The highest award amounted to $58 million to support in-country operations during polio campaigns which include vaccinators, logistics, and training. PATH Number of awards: 29. Total amount: $100,038,652. PATH received 29 awards worth a little over $100 million. The highest grant awarded amounted to $48.1 million to improve country-owned systems to reduce malaria cases and deaths. JSI Number of awards: 7. Total amount: $73,388,330. JSI garnered seven awards worth $73.4 million. The highest of which is a $25.8 million award to accelerate the uptake of HPV vaccines in low- and middle-income countries. Caption Health Number of awards: 1. Total amount: $44,573,474. Caption Health received a single $44.6 million award to develop software that provides an automated obstetric ultrasound solution for midwives in low- and middle-income countries. Philips North America LLC Number of awards: 1. Total amount: $44,566,741. Philips North America, similarly to the contractor above, also received a single $44.6 million award for the same services — providing an obstetric ultrasound solution for midwives in low- and middle-income countries. World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa Number of awards: 9. Total amount: $41,626,891. The World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa received nine awards worth $41.6 million. The highest it received amounted to $15 million to scale up digital payments for polio outbreak campaigns.
