TRIPS waiver ‘did nothing’ for vaccine access, Gavi’s Seth Berkley says

Seth Berkley, the outgoing CEO of Gavi, said a lot of people spent their time fighting for a patent waiver instead of getting companies to be more transparent on where COVID-19 doses were going or helping stop export bans on vaccines.

By Jenny Lei Ravelo // 08 March 2023

Seth Berkley, the outgoing CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance said so much energy went into calling for patent waivers for COVID-19 vaccines instead of getting companies to be transparent on where doses were going.

“You know, it was a challenge. Because here we were in the middle of this emergency, and there was a whole community that said, this is what we have to do, and focused on it and pushed on it, and it was irrelevant,” Berkley said at an event on Tuesday hosted by the Center for Global Development.

Berkley has on several occasions mentioned that a waiver would have made no difference in getting the vaccines to low- and middle-income countries, saying it’s all about “know-how.”
