After garnering positive marks in the U.K.’s multilateral aid review, UNICEF will receive nearly double in British contributions, U.K. Secretary of State for International Development Andrew Mitchell announced Feb. 22.
The British government will nearly double its core funding for UNICEF through 2013 to 40 million pounds ($64 million) each year.
“I have been clear that I will support international agencies that can prove they are having a real impact on the ground and have development objectives closely aligned with our own,” Mitchell said. “UNICEF is tackling grinding poverty in some of the most challenging parts of the world and it is right that we should offer them additional support.”
The review noted that UNICEF has demonstrated “impressive results” in addressing child mortality, maternal health issues and HIV/AIDS, according to a Feb. 22 release of the U.K. Department for International Development.
“Further funding decisions [concerning UNICEF] will be reviewed ahead of 2013/14 in the light of progress against UK priority reforms,” the release notes.
