U.N. Development Program employee Sunday Nwachukwu passed away on Oct. 9, succumbing to injuries he sustained during the attack. He was on life support at a hospital in South Africa.
With Nwachukwu’s passing, the death toll from the incident has risen to 24, half of whom are U.N. workers.
“The devastating attack has taken the lives of our colleagues and partners and maimed many people all of whom were in the building in the pursuit of service to others,” said Daouda Touré, the U.N. resident coordinator, on Oct. 19, as quoted by the U.N. News Center. “Their sacrifice will not be in vain; we will strive to pursue our work, the work for the people of Nigeria as prescribed in the UN Charter, which says ‘we the people.’”
Touré called Nwachukwu as “a hard-working colleague and a friendly brother.”
