The United Nations intends to provide a new aid package of $496 million to Mozambique over the next two years. According to U.N. communications officer Luis Zaqueu, the budget comprises $156 million for human capital development, $119 million to improve governance, $118 million for economic development, and $103 million to combat AIDS. Mozambique is considered one of the world’s poorest nations, as per its ranking – 168th in a field of 177 – in the U.N.’s Human Development Index.
