UN Refugee Agency Gains Dutch Contribution

The Netherlands will provide euro43 million (USD57 million) this year to support the work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The contribution was announced during a Jan. 18 meeting among UNHCR chief Antonio Guterres, Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Uri Rosenthal and Dutch Minister for European Affairs and International Cooperation Ben Knapen.

Rosenthal urged the U.N. agency to target religious minorities in countries such as Iraq, Egypt and Eritrea.

The meeting also tackled the need to enhance the alignment of aid to refugees with development initiatives.
