U.N. representative Alfredo Missair implored the international community to provide emergency relief to the victims of hurricane Felix. Following a meeting with diplomats and voluntary community workers, Missar said that over $43 million should be given over the next few months for the rehabilitation of damaged areas and for the relief of those affected by the calamity. “We need aid to help some 100,000 indirect victims and some 40,000 direct victims affected from [the North Atlantic Autonomous Region] all the way to the northern Jinotega department,” he said. Hurricane Felix has so far wrecked around 9,000 homes, killed 39 people, and displaced at least 18,000 people in the region. (Source: UN calls for aid for hurricane victims in Nicaragua/Xinhua)
