The United Nations Development Program will forge a USD390-million pact with the Democratic Republic of Congo to help the country implement a governance program from 2008 to 2012. The funds, of which USD90 million came from the U.K. Department for International Development, will be funneled into programs that enlarge the governance capacity and facilitate sustainable human and economic development in the DRC. “This program is one of the UNDP’s responses to the challenges generated by a decade of crises and of political economic and social instability in the DRC,” said UNDP country director Adama Guindo. The European Union and the Swedish government also contributed USD4.3 million and USD1.5 million, respectively, to the initiative.
